First developed in the second half of the 20th Century, Hi-Cube Box Cars were designed with higher ceilings to increase the per-car capacity of freight trains and to allow for the loading of larger items. The cars depicted by our models were a common sight on US railroads between the late 1960s and 1990s, however, the use of Hi-Cube Box Cars has steadily increased in the 21st Century.

I'm told that the smooth side version is based on the UP BF-50-4 and that the rib side version is is based on the SP/SSW B-70-36. The latter 40'-6" hi-cube box cars were all built to the same basic design by Pacific Car & Foundry in 1966 and featured 5001 ft3 capacity, Hydra-Cushion underframes and 10'-6" Youngstown sliding doors. These cars came to be nicknamed the "Ugly Ducklings" due to their awkward apearance. They were intended for appliance service.
